Regarding my blog entry, What’s your say on this? Have you had disastrous results out of a box?

Loved Emma’s tips for avoiding hair colour disasters but not sure about the suggestion of using cigarette ash to remove colour staining!!! Once overdid it trying dye my hair blonde, ended up looking like a plucked chicken with a few green slimey feathers…true but very sad!

Toothpaste is fabulous for removing dye stains from skin. Tested by myself, and it works a treat!

Toothpaste! I'll have to try that next time. Apparently Vaseline works when dabbed on the hairline as well, to *prevent* skin stains happening.

oh my goodness... I've had a number of disastrous results with "out of the box" hair colours ... everything from orange splotches, to a neon white/yellow tinge all resulting in damaged brittle hair.  Lucky my hair was "boy short" at the time, so it didn't damage a huge head of hair. I totally agree with the comment from Belinda Jeffrey "You should never use them if you are trying to go more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural colour. Any major changes should be put in the hands of your trusty colourist"

Whilst it's tempting to use "out of the box" hair colours, definitlely best to leave this for professionals.

I am naturally a red head and have tried lots of "Home Hair Colours". Trying to go blonde is the most difficult as it throws so much orange and yellow. The only way is bleach and that can really hurt the scalp. Hairdresser is by far the best option.

Linda, if you are lucky enough to be naturally a red head what are you doing colouring your hair :) ! For years my hair has suffered by my own hands until I realised it was better to let it suffer a little less by the hands of others: the salon!

I wanted to strip a shade or two of my hair colour as it was to dark. Not wanting to do more damage to my scalp and hair, plus had to be extra careful as i had only new hair growing through after surgery. I came up with the idea of using face and body bleach. What wouldn't be as harsh to skin or hair. I used the whole tube on my hair, then put my new red colour in followed by hair conditioner and it worked a treat. saved on money. And I get so many nice comments from people saying what a beautiful hair colour i have. I highly recommended this to anybody.
